School Newsletter

Autumn Term 2009
Newsletter No. 2 - 2nd October

Dear Parents,

The next few weeks are very busy so please make a note of the following.

Friends of the School
The first meeting of the Friends of Emscote Infant School this term will be held on Tuesday 6th October at 7.30pm. It would be great to see some new faces at the meeting. The Friends association arranges fun social events for people to get together and raises money for the school. If you would like to become involved please come along to the meeting.

Open Days
Our Open Days for prospective parents will be held on Tuesday 6th October from 1 - 2.30pm and Thursday 8th October from 9.30 - 10.30am and 11 - 11.55am. Please inform friends and neighbours with pre-school children to visit us on these days. All applications for children to start school in September 2010 must be returned to the Admissions Service by 23rd October 2009.

Christmas Card Designs
Miss Hudson is organising a ‘Design a Christmas Card Project’ with the children. They have created festive designs in school, and will be bringing them home with instructions on how to order printed Christmas cards featuring their design. The deadline for returning these is Friday 9th October.

Curriculum Focus Week
This term’s curriculum focus week runs between 12th - 16th October and will cover ECO and ICT. During the week the children will be working on a range of exciting activities. Please start collecting any recyclable items for DT modelling. There will be an assembly on Thursday 15th October at 9.15am where we will be to share all the new learning that has taken place this week.

Parents’ Coffee Afternoon
You are reminded there will be a coffee afternoon for parents to meet and discuss any concerns or interests with each other. This takes place on Monday 12th October at 2.15pm in the staffroom. Any parent is welcome to pop in for a coffee at this time for a chat.

Parents’ Evenings
Parents’ evenings will be held on Tuesday 13th October 5 – 7.30pm and Thursday 15th October 3.15 – 5.00pm. Lists will go up in the entrance hall from Tuesday 6th October, please sign up for an appointment.

Family Afternoon
Family Afternoon is on Thursday 22nd October, when all reception children go home for lunch at 12 o’clock and return at 2pm to show their parents, grandparents and families their classroom and some of the exciting things they have been doing in their first half term at Emscote.

Harvest
Also on Thursday 22nd October at 9.15am is our Harvest assembly in church. Please send in a tin for our harvest collection which is going to The Salvation Army in Leamington which runs a drop in centre and hostel. Examples of the foods desperately needed are tinned fruit, tinned spaghetti, tinned potatoes, pasta, soup, tinned meat and rice pudding. (They are already well stocked with beans!)

Wear It Pink Day
Don’t forget October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and on Thursday 22nd October we will also be turning the school pink in support of the fight against breast cancer.  Wear anything pink and send a donation to help fund Breast Cancer Campaign’s vital research.

Inset Day
Just a reminder school is closed on Friday 23rd October for staff training.

Free School Meals
Please let us know if you are entitled to a free school meal, even if your child does not wish to take a meal. This is very important to the school as it effects the funding that the school receives.

Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child is a scheme where the children fill shoeboxes with gifts to send to children in poorer parts of the world as Christmas presents. We will be having an assembly soon explaining all about it, and the children will be sent home with a detailed leaflet explaining the scheme.

Walk to School
We’re encouraging children to walk to school every day if possible, as it improves their health and fitness. It can also reduce the number of cars coming to school and improve safety around the school site. If you need to drive please park away from the school and walk down.

KerbSafe Scheme
We still need volunteers for the KerbSafe Scheme. This is an initiative by Warwickshire County Council to help make young children safer when they are out near roads, and involves roadside sessions with children working in pairs with an adult instructor. We are planning to run this scheme for year one children, having had great success with it last year. If you can spare a couple of hours a week for about 6 weeks please let Miss Hudson know. We will only be able to run the scheme if we have enough helpers.

Data Collection
Please do remember to return your child’s data collection sheet, even if there are no amendments. It is vital that we have updated current information on file to be able to contact you if necessary.

Website
Don’t forget to look at the school’s website for information and photographs of events in school

Appeal
Warwick Hospital is collecting plastic bottle tops for a local girl who is disabled and is in desperate need of an electric wheelchair. A local mobility company has kndly agreed to offer the little girl a wheelchair if she can collect her own body weight in tops eg milk tops, fizzy drink tops and water bottle tops. Also the clear plastic protector caps of fruit shoots. Any help would be much appreciated. Please bring the tops to reception and there will be a box to collect them.

Yours sincerely,

Debi Cossins
